Boxing Day
Do you still give yourself a chance to dream your dream?
G’day y’all! It’s the week of Christmas and I hope everyone has been able to find some time to take a beat and count their blessings. As a kid who grew up in Australia and New Zealand, I loved Christmas Day, but I really loved Boxing Day. I honestly can’t tell you what it stands for, but what I can say is that there was always cricket — which for me meant spending time watching the Boxing Day Test match mixed with copious amounts of time in my backyard pretending I was bowling, batting or fielding. I have fond memories of imagining I was that person out there on the field. I started to have these dreams about coaching when I was in my early twenties. I dreamed of being player, but I always dreamed about being a coach. I dreamed of sitting on the bus, giving the pre match talks or interviews and then making the way to the coach’s box.
My question is: do you still dream as an adult as you did as a kid?
I think it’s really important that we spend some time dreaming — just imagining what we could be doing over the course of our career. When we take the time to dream, we give ourselves the space to find the desires of our hearts. I think this is really important because it helps us bring to the surface the things that we often tamp down — we say what is realistic, we say what is possible, we say what we believe we can achieve — but sometimes dreaming big helps create the impetus to generate our best ideas, our fear-less ideas and our innovative ideas.
So what do you do after you dream a bit? Sometimes nothing. Sometimes it’s enough to spend a time remembering that you have the big goals and that they still are your dream. Other times, they can be a time for reflection — am I actually trying to live my dream or am I on different path? What do I actually want? Also, it can be a time to be inspired to try new things and build towards this dream — creating action plans to be the change that you want to drive.
Anyway, it’s just a short thought this week. Maybe on a walk while letting the food digest, you spend a bit of time dreaming about your career, your life and your family time. It’s worth dreaming about and knowing what you really want to achieve.
